Things are coming together nicely for the 6th Tenkara Summit, which will take place in Estes Park on September 16th. This year we are counting on the presence of Dr. Hisao Ishigaki and Yvon Chouinard who will be speaking at the event, along with Adam Trahan, Jason Klass, Steve Schweitzer. In addition we’ll be featuring clinics and demos on fly-tying, casting and more. This is promising to be a great event, and we hope to see you all there!

As summer rolls in each year, I shift out of hunting mode and into fishing, which has meant primarily kayak fishing until about 4 years ago, when I caught the tenkara bug! I have a question for anybody that might be able to help….I work for a Japanese company and come over here a few times every year, as a matter of fact sitting in Nasu Shiobara right now.. I would like to find a guide in this prefecture to fish with, and been having a hard time finding one. I was at a fishing shop a couple hours ago trying to find someone with no luck…… This is made all the more difficult by a very limited grasp on the language…. Any advice?

Hey Jim, unfortunately as I have learned over the last few years mainland Japan doesn’t really have a fishing guiding culture so to speak. I have tried getting a few people interested in guiding with no success.
My main recommendation would be to try posting in our forum or on Facebook tenkara groups (such as Tenkara Anglers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/420827871266964/, or Tenkara Japan: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tenkara/) to see if anyone may be available or know of someone interested in taking you around.
I just this morning found lodgings for my wife and I and was lucky to do so. I haven’t been to Estes Park in over forty years so I had no idea of the demand there is for places to stay! We were looking for a cabin, but faggedaboudit – I couldn’t find a one without taking out a mortgage on our paid-for house. We did get the last standard room in one of the older lodges in town. If you’re going and haven’t got a place to say yet, good luck!
