This morning someone at the Tenkara Anglers Facebook Group suggested that Jason Klass of Tenkaratalk.com and I do a podcast together. Brilliant idea. Everytime I talk to Jason on the phone we have great conversations about tenkara; why not do the same but record it? So, less than 24 hours later, we give you the first Tenkara USA – Tenkara Talk podcast.

Listening now. Nice to see this done. 😎 tj
Feedback will be appreciated. Sorry the sound quality is not that great on this one. A good learning experience.
And, it was good to know we have plenty to talk about, so there should be more in the future.
I liked it.
Basically the back and forth asking each-other questions. Almost like you are interviewing each-other and it was not just one sided.
I can see a periodic podcast just like what you did today where you basically record a live conversation with no exact agenda but with some rough ideas of what you will discuss.
My thought is you can make future podcasts feel like we are sitting around a campfire after a fun day of fishing where the rest of the world can sit in, just for a little while, to hear those from the tenkara community discuss interesting tenkara related topics.
That to me makes it feel a little different than a normal podcast would.
I would even go so far as making it feel a litte more camp-fire-ry by having more than 2 people but a group of 3 to 5, maybe get a couple others in the tenkara community to all be present, and have a tenkara campfire chat live recording.
Anyway, good 1st podcast.

I liked it. Very relaxed feel to the whole thing. I liked that it was very informative and not preaching the way it has to be. Good topics, really liked the long line discussion. Would also like to hear a podcast on a day of fishing.
Good stuff! I like the two person format. Thanks to both of you for putting yourselves out there. I’m looking forward to hearing more.
You could have a designated spot where people could ask questions that you could save up for a future podcast.
Love this. Helped pass some time at work. Great info! I look forward to more podcast. I also agree with Thomas. It would be awesome to have a place where we could post questions!
Really liked the podcast. I agree with having a place to post questions as well.
I like the length as well. 30-40 minutes seems to fit well. Interesting discussion about innovation vs. simplicity. I remember what really intrigued me about tenkara was the comment about how fly rod companies have a new rod every year and you can’t fish well without the latest, or that your waders are out of style etc. Tenkara was about the opposite, about making the gear work for you through technique and experience, not having to get the best gear. But at the same time, there are times when something needs to be improved upon for future models, and that’s why I like that Daniel is pushing for simplicity and Jason, and others, are pushing for innovation in certain aspects, and everyone can meet in the middle.
In fact innovation that is properly executed can sometimes mean making things more simple.
I look forward to future podcasts. Thanks again!
Can you enable your podcast to be loaded on iTunes or ipad podcasts? Thanks. Enjoyed you first.
Fred, I just submitted it to iTunes yesterday, hopefully it will work soon.
A tip , fwiw – not sure how it works on a M$ OS computer. But on MAC OS systems you can save the mp3 file to your hard drive, with control+save as. Then after download is complete, control+click the file. Then on the pop up choose ‘open with” and choose iTunes. Now with an mp3 file iTunes will be the default anyway. But once played with iTunes it will sync to your iPod/Pad. So no need to wait for the maker of a podcast to be upload to iTunes server to get the podcast on your iTunes sync list.
The above process is most helpful for videos. I often save favorite youtube videos I like to my hd. ( I use keepvid ). Then use the above process to open the mp4 files with iTunes rather than the default Quick Time Player. Once the file is played in iTunes it is added to the list. The next time I sync the iPod or iPad, the video is stored on the iPad. ( there are more difficult ways to do this, but I recommend the easy way ) Download lower resolution video for the iPod. The iPad or laptop is happy with higher resolution.
Sorry but no comments on the podcast since I haven’t listened to it yet. It just finished downloading it.
I liked it alot. No fake questions. Honest questions and honest answers. I also like the idea of adding other members to the discussions. It could make for some very interesting conversations about other Tenkara styles.

finally got a chance to listen to the podcast. Thanks for answering my question about technique progression. thats something I feel like I havent really mastered yet. I often find myself wondering what to use next when the fish are not biting….luckly that doesnt happen very often
Daniel I like that you pointed out that you think people should focus on shorter presentations. I have found that with tenkara my presentations have become very short most less than a foot with some not being in the water for more than a few inches of drift. this last weekend I went fishing with the president of our local fly fishing club and while he was rigging up, I was fishing (of course) and when he got down to the water, about 10 minutes, I had made many presentations. the first words out of his mouth were, “I cant believe how much water you just covered!” thats something that I have tried to stress to others picking up tenkara for the first time, yes it is just a rod that can be used any way you want as long as your catching fish. but the equipment really shines when you use the “style and techniques” that have been honed in Japan for years. its not just a different kind of rod, its a “method” all of its own. and I believe when people start to realizing that, they will end up enjoying tenkara on a greater level.
Thanks Matt. I appreciate the comment.
Are you planning to attend the Summit again this year?
