Lance Milks is one of the first fly-fishing guides in the country to focus exclusively on tenkara guided trips.
From Lance:
“I have been practicing tenkara since its introduction to the United States. I have used the tenkara technique to fish all over the country, from California to New York. I reside in North Carolina and have found that tenkara is a wonderful way to fish in the blue ridge and smokey mountains. I have been guiding tenkara specific trips since the fall of 2010. I have found it to be a great way to introduce people to fly fishing and as a way for experienced fly fisherman to expand their knowledge of the history of sport of fly fishing.

I guide mostly in the northwest corner of North Carolina. I do backcountry day trips for those wanting a unique challenge that our tight NC streams can offer, and delayed harvest (catch and release stocked water) which we use as classrooms for people wanting to either learn how to fish tenkara or to hone a specific technique.

    Hi Lance,

I would like to learn fly fishing and after hearing about Tenkara would prefer that method to the traditional. I live near Winston Salem and would like to book a day of learning/fishing. Don’t have any equipment at this time so would have to rent whatever is necessary if that is possible. Let me know if you have any availability over the next couple of weeks (out of state after that for a couple of weeks).

    Thanks,
    David Summerlin

My partner, Tim, purchased a Tenkara rod a few months back and is so excited to be fishing with it. He has watched videos and goes out regularly to experiment. He recently took a fly-tying class and loved it. He is super enthusiastic to think like a fish, predict where one might be, and then actually catch one there.

Anyway, I’d love to gift him with some private lessons. We are based in the Asheville area. I know he’d be willing to travel to fish.

Might you share with me what you could offer and the costs?

    Thank you,
    Linda Block

I’ve fished Tenkara with Lance at Stone Mtn a few years back and caught numerous trout as well as one 20+ with his excellent guidance. You should definitely go on a trip with him!
