Western North Carolina is tenkara heaven. The scale, character and natural surroundings of our local trout waters make them ideal for tenkara fishing and offer great opportunities for the novice or expert alike. They present a wide choice of fishing situations from sizeable tail-waters to the most remote and intimate Appalachian mountain streams. Fish on offer include Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, both wild and hatchery reared. An “Appalachian Slam” of all three in one day is not uncommon. Many of the waters we fish enjoy the protection of “Catch and Release Only” regulations from October through May, making this our prime season. Our winters tend to be mild and the more hardy angler is usually rewarded with excellent fishing when everyone else is typically inside tying flies. Whether you want to catch a lot of trout, catch a big trout or catch your first trout, you can do it when you come to Asheville.

John Miko is part of a growing number of tenkara guides North Carolina has available. He’s fallen in love with the fun and simplicity of tenkara style fly fishing and introduced it to many other converts. There is nothing he enjosy more than teaching someone new to fly fishing this beginner-friendly approach or to see “old pros” slowly come around to a new, cheaper and highly effective way to enjoy our sport.

Through a leadership role with the local chapter of Trout Unlimited, John is an active advocate for cold-water fisheries conservation. At Unreel Fly Fishing they practice catch and release-only fishing and endeavor to leave every stream a little better than we found it.

John also work Project Healing Waters, an outstanding organization that utilizes fly fishing and related activities as a therapeutic outlet for recovering wounded warriors and disabled veterans.
